| The ginkgo appears to produce some substances which may help us live
healthier and longer lives.
A concentrated extract of ginkgo, called
Tebonin, is available in Europe and
Mexico and is used for the treatment of circulatory disorders, such as
peripheral vascular disease, cerebral insufficiency and varicose veins. There
now exists good documentation for the effectiveness of ginkgo extracts in the
treatment of these problems. More recently some active components of the tree
have been isolated, identified, characterized and synthesized.
A long-term study of the use of ginkgo extract in
the treatment of chronic cerebral insufficiency in over 100 geriatric patients has been
reported. Some of the
symptoms of cerebral insufficiency such as dizziness, short-term memory loss and other
signs of mental deterioration were found to significantly improve following treatment with
the extract. |
Studies using a concentrated extract of Ginkgo biloba leaves
have been found to restore regional cerebral blood flow following induced or spontaneously
appearing embolic (blood clot) phenomena. In humans, these extracts have been demonstrated to
increase brain perfusion as well as to increase oxygen and glucose consumption of the
brain.
A paper in a German medical journal reported
on the effects of Ginkgo biloba extract on eight healthy, young men who were subjected to
conditions of hypoxia. The study was randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled and
crossover in design. Neurological responses of the subjects receiving the extract were
significantly better than those receiving placebo under these conditions.
