PERSONAL
TRAINER TESTIMONIALS
When
you first speak to a personal trainer he or she should ask you
what your specific goal (s) are, and then listen to what you
have to say, instead of giving you a canned sales pitch on how
great they are.
If
your goal is for rehabilitation of an injury, that you have
been seeing a physician, chiropractor, sport injury
specialist, etc., the personal trainer should contact the
specialist you have been seeing to find out what you can and
cannot do, and explain the program they will be putting you on
before starting. Remember the good majority of personal
trainers are only trained in exercise kineseology (what
muscles are used on specific exercises) and exercise
physiology (what happens to the body when doing specific
exercises). They are usually not physical therapists, doctors,
chiropractors, etc.

The
trainer must be knowledgeable in exercise kineseology.
definition: how muscles, joints, and connective tissue move,
and respond during various types of exercise, to help you
learn which exercises work which muscles. Exercise Kineseology
is one major part of a personal trainers schooling. If he or
she does not know what muscles, joints, and tendons are used
during certain exercises, they could be hurting instead of
helping you.
QUESTION TO ASK: Are you schooled in Exercise
Kineseology? If the answer is yes, then ask What does it mean?
The answer should be
How muscles, joints, and
connective tissue move, and respond during various types of
exercise. If their answer is not close to this or does not
make any sense to you, do not choose them.
The
trainer must be knowledgeable in exercise physiology.
definition: how the body reacts to different types of
exercise, to aid you in knowing what happens to your physique
during exercise. Exercise Physiology is the second major part
of a personal trainers schooling. If he or she does not know
what happens to your muscles, joints, and connective tissue
during certain exercises, they will be giving you inaccurate
information, that in the long run could be detrimental to your
body.
QUESTION TO ASK: Are you schooled in Exercise
Physiology? If the answer is yes, then ask What does it mean?
The answer should be
How the body reacts to
different types of exercises. If their answer is not close to
this or does not make any sense to you, do not choose them.
The
trainer should have you fill out a health evaluation form,
which would contain your physical goals, health problems, etc.
to help design your program. A well schooled and experienced
personal trainer would have you fill out a health evaluation
form, that way the personal trainer always has something to
look at for designing your program, talking to your doctor,
etc. It is not wise to trust a personal trainer that does not
have you write this information down. If this information is
forgotten or not asked by the personal trainer it could
jeopardize your goal or health.
QUESTION TO ASK: Do I have to fill anything out before
training with you? If the answer is yes, then ask What do I
fill out? The answer should be A health evaluation form, which
would contain your physical goals, health problems, etc. If
their answer is not close to this or does not make any sense
to you, do not choose them.
The
trainer should test your physical capabilities with specific
exercises to determine the right program for you. In order to
find out what exercises you can or cannot do and to measure
your flexibility and strength. The personal trainer should
test you on specific exercises for each major body part,
before designing your program. If the personal trainer does
not test you he or she will be taking you blindly through your
workout, not being sure of your strengths and weaknesses.
QUESTION TO ASK: What do you do to design my workout
program? The answer should be You will be tested on certain
exercises to determine your flexibility, strengths, and
weaknesses as well as filling out a health evaluation form on
your goals, health history, etc.. If their answer is not close
to this or does not make any sense to you, do not choose them.
The
trainer should supply you with detailed descriptions and
photos/illustrations of the exercises & stretches he or
she is having you do, to allow you to learn on your own. A
well schooled and experienced personal trainer knows the
importance of having photo/illustrations of exercises and
stretches he or she is having you do, because once you are on
your own, you most likely will forget a lot of what the
personal trainer has taught you, so having
photos/illustrations to refer to can make the difference
between doing your workout correctly or not.
QUESTION TO ASK:
Do you supply photos or illustrations of the exercises and
stretches that you will be teaching me? If the answer is Yes,
you have found a personal trainer that takes his work and you
very seriously. If their answer is no, it is your decision
whether to go with them or not, this is not crucial, but hunt
around first before choosing.
The
trainer should supply you with a detailed description of how
your exercise program works for you to understand how you are
reaching your goal. The personal trainer who wants you to be
aware of how your workout is going to attain your goal(s) will
supply you with a description of how your workout program
works. By doing this you will clearly understand why you are
doing this type of workout program, and ultimately get a more
effective workout.
QUESTION TO ASK:
Do you supply me with a description of the workout program you
would put me on? If the answer is Yes, you have found a
personal trainer that has taken the time to understand in
depth your workout program. If their answer is no, it is your
decision whether to go with them or not, this is not crucial,
but it can make the difference between a thorough or so, so
trainer.
The
trainer should test your body fat & muscle percentage on a
weekly or monthly basis, and keep a record of it to make sure
you are reaching your goal. In order to know that your body is
making changes the personal trainer should test your body fat
periodically (every 2 weeks or per month) to make sure the
workout and or food program is working correctly, and if
changes need to be made.
QUESTION TO ASK:
Do you test my body fat and muscle percentage, and what method
do you use? If the answer is Yes, and the method is the
Bioimpedance method you have found a personal trainer that has
purchased the most accurate mobile body fat tester on the
market and if the personal trainer has access to the
Hydrostatic method usually done at a hospital even better. If
it is the Skin Calipers method there is a 5-6% plus or minus
accuracy, but it is better then nothing. If their answer is
no, or it is the Futrex method do not choose them.
The
trainer should have at least one full year of experience
teaching exercise and he or she should be certified, but
remember certification does not make a great trainer, anyone
can get certified, experience is essential. Majority of the
personal training certifications are well put together some
better then others. The problem is, it does not take an
experienced personal trainer to pass the test, if the person
studied the manual. Does memorizing a manual give hands on
experience? Absolutely not, this can only come from years of
experience. Example: A person passes a TV repair test. The
person goes on their first repair job, and the problem they
run into was not on the test or manual, so the person either
tries to fix the problem, which could cause more damage to the
TV or advise the customer to try another TV repair person. In
most cases the person does not want to lose the money or look
foolish, so they attempt to try to fix it. Now this is a TV,
you do not want a non-experienced personal trainer doing this
with your body!
QUESTION TO ASK: Are you certified and how long have
you been training people? If the answer is Yes, and has been
training people for at least one year ask them if you can call
any of their clients? If the answer is Yes, this personal
trainer is confident in their experience with different
training situations, but do not choose them until you have
called at least three clients and got very positive feedback.
If the answer is no to the certification, and has more then
one year experience, still check out their references, this
personal trainer could be exceptional because of their
experience.
The
trainer must supply you with information about the importance
of a balanced nutrition plan and what it can do for you to
reach your goal. The importance of a nutrition plan is
essential for you to reach your goal. Even if the personal
trainers knowledge of nutrition is limited he or she must let
you know how important it is, and point you in the right
direction to embark on this part to reaching your goal,
whether it is a book, dietician, program, etc.
QUESTION TO ASK:
How do you go about changing or improving my eating habits? If
the answer is a food program is designed for you after finding
out your goal, daily activities, body fat percentage, and
health history, you have found a exceptional personal trainer,
this trainer has taken the time and effort to take care of all
aspects of your eating, taking care of all the leg work for
you. If their answer is no, but they will point you in the
right direction, it is your decision whether to go with them
or not, this is not crucial, but hunt around first before
choosing.
Beware
of gyms that have personal trainers as employees instead of
independent contractors. The gym takes a large percentage of
their pay. What this can cause is hiring inexperienced to no
experience personal trainers. Since the pay is low the turn
around of personal trainers is high, so the gym may take any
person qualified or not to fill that position.
QUESTION TO ASK:
Are your trainers certified and how many years experience do
they have? If the answer is Yes, and have been training people
for at least one year ask them if you can call any of their
clients? If the answer is Yes, do not choose them until you
have called at least three clients and got very positive
feedback. If the answer is no to the certification, and has
more then one year experience, still check out their
references, this personal trainer could be good because of
their experience.
